Supporting the City's economic development efforts, the City Council recently approved a comprehensive visioning effort for the community as a whole. Three workshops have been scheduled and are currently underway:
- May 5th: Solicited feedback from participants on overall goals to strive for relevant to growth and development over the next five, ten or more years; also identified were areas of the community to study more intently.
- May 19th: Focused on "what type of development" should "go where" in order to accomplish the general goals and interests identified in the first workshop.
- June 10th: The final workshop will work with participants to craft a single vision for the community in relation to growth and development – a vision that will subsequently be presented to the City Council for consideration and action.
If you missed the earlier workshops, please attend the final workshop. Refreshments will be served. The participation and feedback so far has been fantastic! A sprinkling of broad goals and themes identified to date have included:
- Revitalize West Grand Avenue - Streetscape improvements, increase businesses that provide services to local neighborhoods, create a sense of place, slow traffic, add mixed use development. In essence, create a vital downtown!
- Focus on the Beach – Promote eco-tourism, expand walking trails (the boardwalk to Pismo will be a gem!), push forward in developing a beachfront/lodge & conference facility, and expand tourist amenities, including shops and retail.
- Other Broad Themes – Increase and broaden tax base, preserve job base, preserve and enhance our greatest asset - a "beach community" feel, address affordable housing issues, add public art, and improve the Fourth Street corridor.s
The consultants from Design, Community & Environment will compile a full report of the findings and observations. Videotapes of the workshops are broadcast on the City's Government Cable Access Channel 20.
