Ingredients of Grover Beach Community Pride -
Civic Involvement, Proactive Code Enforcement,
Infrastructure Investment, and
Varied & Valued Leisure Services

So many things go into making a community sparkle – making it a place that people are proud to call “home”. The Grover Beach Visioning Project last spring was a start. With an average of 80 participants at each of the three evening workshops, the turnout alone demonstrated that Grover Beach residents and business owners care!

Facility and infrastructure improvements are another indicator of pride. Read on to learn more about our community’s progress when it comes to property clean-ups, road maintenance, other capital improvements, and parks and recreation enhancements.

PROACTIVE CODE ENFORCEMENT
A proactive Code Enforcement Program was one benefit of establishing the City’s first full-time Fire Department this past July 1. Under the direction of the Fire Department, while working closely with Police and other City departments, voluntary clean-ups are happening throughout the community!

Every closed case reflects a step forward, whether it’s removing abandoned vehicles, eliminating rubbish, cutting back weeds, or enforcing parking and storage of recreational or disabled vehicles.

Contact Captain PJ Ferguson at the Grover Beach Fire Department, (805) 473-4590, for more information on how you can assist in reducing fire and life safety hazards, nuisances and visual blight in your neighborhood.

Consider the statistics:

  • 46 code enforcement complaints identified by residents.
  • 28 code enforcement complaints identified by City staff.
  • Fire engine companies activated 41 code enforcement contacts.

Status of complaints:

  • 88 percent closed and resolved voluntarily.
  • 12 percent in the initial phase of the process – courtesy letters sent.
  • 8 percent in the secondary phase – violation notice sent.
STREETS AND OTHER INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT
Systematically, progress is being made on rehabilitating our local streets, new amenities are being added, and improvements are being made at our parks, and investments are being made to improve infrastructure systems for sewer, water, and storm drainage.

Key projects undertaken during this current fiscal year are described in this edition of the Sea Breeze, including segments of local street rehabs. An updated and prioritized list of local street improvements planned through FY 07 can be found on the City’s website at www.grover.org/streets.html

PARKS AND RECREATION – STAY ACTIVE, TRY NEW THINGS, AND ENJOY LIFE
For folks who choose to live by the beach, recreation is an essential ingredient of “the good life”. The guiding plan for leisure services in Grover Beach for the next 10 to 20 years has recently been updated and approved by the City Council – the Parks and Recreation Element to the General Plan. An undertaking requiring many hours from the public, appointed and elected officials, and staff, its completion is a major milestone.

A number of improvements to our local parks have already been completed. Check out the great new covered patios and pavilions at our 16th Street Park – available to rent for your next big family event.

Or take a stroll on our new beachfront boardwalk. Beginning just west of the golf course at the foot of West Grand Avenue, you can meander through the dunes, cross over to the Monarch Butterfly Preserve, and continue down the Pacific Coast Highway to the Pismo Beach promenade and pier.

And don’t forget the many and varied community events offered throughout the year in partnership with the Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce. Every year, our offerings grow, participation grows, and our community partnerships expand.

If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to get involved!

“If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become unstable without knowing it.”
--Herodotus, 484 BC – 430 BC, The Histories of Herodotus
