Program/Class Descriptions

Grover Beach Parks and Recreation is fortunate to have many talented, passionate instructors in our community. Community classes are offered for a variety of ages and skill levels. To enroll in classes you must create an Active Net profile and enroll through our registration platform. Some classes to require a waiver to be filled out prior to participation. 

Calligraphy: This is a class that will focus on learning the simple Roman Italic Alphabet. This type of calligraphy is perfect for invitations, notes, and lists! You will learn both upper and lower case, and swash capitals. Calligraphy means beautiful writing, and it can change your life! Students need to supply: medium nib flair/felt tip pen in dark color, sheets of copier paper, 12 inch ruler, and pencil

Dance Fitness: Enjoy a beginning level class that includes body and breath awareness, stretching, low-impact aerobics, and dance activities that include an eclectic range of genres and multi-cultural forms. The class will include modern, jazz, Broadway, ethnic, and improvisation. Lighten your spirit and feel joy!

International Folk Dance: Enjoy moderate workout by leaning dances from around the world, including dance from Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Israel. The instructor has a B.A. in Anthropology, and a M.F.A. in Dance. She has a background of 50+ years teaching multi-cultural dance, and will use her creative touch to modify cultural dance forms for your health and enjoyment. (18+)

Doomsday Skate School Youth: Coach Dottie aims to help you build confidence while rolling at any age; emphasizing proper technique of falls, stops, turning, backwards skate, cross over and some fun footwork. Offering both beginner and intermediate courses - participants will practice and play while learning how to roller skate safely. Blades or Quad skates ok. REQUIRED: Helmet, wrist/elbow/knee pads and own skates.

Doomsday Skate School Adults: This is a class with a free skate vibe for adults 18 and over to practice their skating. SK8 Night offers basic skate skills to those who need it and basic dance and cardio flow movement instruction as a class concentration. Sk8 Night is meant to encourage fun fitness, community and networking for South County rollers. Price includes instruction, skate maintenance if needed. Bladed or Quad skates ok. Rental skates available upon reservation on doomsdayskate.com.

Painting - Acrylic and Oil: This is an established class that caters to the first-time, beginner student as well as intermediate and advanced artists with prior experience. Instructor Kristopher Doe provides instruction and encouragement in a creative environment. Classes will be held at the Grover Beach Community Center, 1230 Trouville Avenue, Grover Beach. Tai Chi: Based on Sun Style Tai Chi, this program uses flowing movements to increase muscular strength and protect joints. Good for those with arthritis and anyone wishing for more flexibility. Class includes warm-up exercises and movement sequences in an innovative teaching format that helps facilitate safe learning. Tai Chi may be performed in a chair or walker. Instructor, Dr. Kathryn Phelan, will facilitate this class combining a decade of teaching and research experience. 

Yoga: A perfect blend of movement and restoration. This class focuses on mindful alignment in a playful, supportive environment. In the first portion of the class, we’ll journey through foundational poses, using our breath to expand our strength and flexibility. The last portion of our time will be dedicated to restoring the body through various therapeutic postures that we will rest in for several breaths. Leave class feeling balanced, inspired, and connected. A great mid-week reset. (Note: This class is an all-levels class. Students should be moderately active and able to get up and down on their mats multiple times during class. Bring your yoga mat - other props provided by instructor.)
